In case you are wondering what's going on in this picture, Q is "reading" a book on the couch. Every day, one by one, he pulls all the books off the shelf and leafs through them, sometimes humming or "talking" to himself. He chases us around the house, thrusting books at us, saying "mmm....mmm....mmmm....mmmm" until we finally stoop to read him something. Here's a better picture:

The Nerdling
I really thought my first kid would be the nerdy (nerdier?) one. With his encyclopedic knowledge of military aircraft and paleo-historical creatures, his better-than-strong vocabulary has fully bloomed. But Thing 2 is sure giving Thing 1 a run for his money in the nerd department. At 16 months, the Q-ball is a complete bookworm. This is a common site (sorry about the photo quality - he's hard to sneak up on):

We're right there with you. I never thought I would be hiding books from an 8 month-old, but it has come to that. It's an obsession. Sure, "Pat the Bunny" is a pretty good read, but when it must be read at least 5 times in a row, several times each day, it gets a little old.

I look forward to my cool children giving your nerdy children swirlies.
No way can your guys wind up more nerdy than my 2 kids. Think about it: my kids are growing up in a University of Chicago dorm. U of C dorms are like factories that manufacture nerds. And world class nerds. Think about it, countries like China and India, which are making huge advances in nerd production, send their nerdiest kids to Chicago. When I visited Cuba I met exactly 1 nerd. He ended up coming here to study. How is that nerds everywhere, even those locked behind a US blockade, find their way to Chicago? Here's my theory, which proves my own unapproachable nerdiness: Have you seen X-Men 2? There's a machine in it which can detect every single mutant everywhere in the world. Well, I think nerds have that type of detection capability built into their physiology. And when you have as many nerds packed together as Chicago does, other nerds can't help but feel their presence and migrate here. My kids are growing up right here in this hive of nerdiness. Your kids are growing up in Northern California. Your kids might become jihadists, but they won't be as nerdy as my kids.
